People condemned for 'laughing' at naked man in Leeds city centre

People have been condemned for filming and laughing at a man who stripped off in Leeds city centre before he was detained under the Mental Health Act.

The man was seen outside H. Samuel jewellers on Briggate shortly after midday on Thursday, September 12.

According to witnesses a large group of people gathered round the naked man and started filming him and laughing.

West Yorkshire Police officers were called to the scene and the man was detained under the Mental Health Act before being taken to hospital for an assesment.

According to witnesses a large group of people gathered round the man and started taking photographs and filming him.

Speaking anonymously, one witness said: "I saw two men with helmets outside the doors of H Samuel, I realised they were police officers and thought someone had tried to break in or something.

"But then I noticed that most of the crowd of around 30 to 50 people were laughing and I saw that the men in helmets were dealing with a naked man who looked like he could be anywhere between 14 to 25 years old.

"I saw the two police give the man something to cover himself with and they took him inside the shop, as I walked away I saw another police car come towards the area."

She added: "I felt extremely uncomfortable being there with people staring and laughing, and taking videos of a clearly not well person like some sort of freak show, and I actually still feel disgusted at what I saw, not at the naked man but at how the crowd of adults were acting."

A police spokesman said: "At 12.30pm today, police were called to reports of a naked man in Briggate.

"Officers attended and detained the man under the Mental Health Act. He is being taken to hospital for an assessment."
