People complain of water smelling like 'body odour' and 'cannabis'

People in one part of Liverpool said they had foul smelling and tasting water.

Those living in the Mossley Hill and Childwall areas took to social media on Tuesday and Wednesday to say their water tasted strange and also smelt. Some said it smelt like body odour, while others said like cannabis.

One person in the Penny Lane area asked on Facebook whether other people were experiencing something similar. He said: "Any one else got funny smelling water? From the taps that is."

Many other people also shared their experiences. Another resident said: "Yes! I noticed that from last night, my hot water smells a bit like weed. Like a weird organic/chemical mix. Thought I was losing my mind."

A second person added: "Yes! Same in L16. Got in the shower the last two mornings and it smells like a mix between BO and grapefruit. Thought I was going mad."

A third person also said: "Yes I have! It’s a horrible smell I couldn’t put my finger on. Thought it was just me and kept smelling glasses thinking maybe it was dishwater tablets or something."

On Wednesday, United Utilities issued winter advice following last week’s cold snap and this week’s subsequent unseasonably warm weather. It said they're receiving a very high number of calls relating to leaks and burst pipes caused by the rapid change in temperature.

The majority of the leaks and bursts appear to be in homes and private properties across the region and United Utilities are asking everyone to please find and fix them as soon as possible. If you have no water in your home, the company said to check with neighbours – if it is just you that is affected then it’s likely that you have a leak in your house.

Dripping taps, dripping showers, leaky loos and a dripping overflow pipe (which is located outside your home) are all common causes of leaks in your home. People may also find your pipes have burst due to the cold weather.
