People can't agree on what to call that kids' game where you knock someone's door and run away

Huh, kids today eh? Tell the children of 2021 with their iPads and fancy gaming consoles that us oldies used to make our own entertainment with just a hoop and stick and they'll laugh at you.

But there's one pastime that still transcends the generation gap, even if those on the receiving end would rather it had been consigned to the history books.

That's right, we're talking about knocking on neighbours' doors and legging it - an evergreen prank that's just as popular with mischievous little ones now as it was with those in short trousers decades ago.

However, an argument seems to have developed online over what it's actual name is, with one Twitter user asking, "When you were younger what did you call it when you banged on someone's door and ran away?"

And the question seemed to strike a chord with many - around 2.5k to be exact - all of whom chimed in with their opinion on what the answer should be.

People had lots to say on the subject (Twitter)

"We called it 'knock granny out of bed'," posted one, while another added, "Knock a door run."

Other submissions ranged from the bizarre - 'Nicky knocky nido' - to the ridiculous - "Chick a melle, or something like that," recalled someone called Prof Seymour Fairness.

Elsewhere there was 'Knock a dolly', 'Rap tap ginger', 'Ding dong dash' and even 'Ring bang squoosh'.

In Wales the consensus seemed to be that 'bobby knocking' is its name, with Chris from Swansea amongst others admitting that's what he and his friends used to call it.

One joker couldn't resist the chance to crack a cheeky gag, however.

"It's called Hermes Delivery round my way," he replied.
