People can meet family in the street rather than parks says Matt Hancock

People can meet their family and friends in the street rather than parks, according to Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Mr Hancock appeared on This Morning today, after seeing Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby slam the government for not putting up a minister yesterday to answer questions.

He said: "I saw the clip online at your frustrations, so thought I'd come on so your viewers can get it from the horse's mouth."

During the interview Mr Hancock also said "we've got to rely on common sense to get us through this."

Phil asked him if we have to pick between parents, because under the new regulations only one person from each household is allowed to meet each other.

Mr Hancock said: "One parent at a time is fine, all of these are balanced judgements to get the R rate down and stop the virus getting out of control, we've got to keep the hygiene stuff going, people meeting outside and not inside is essential.

"Large groups gatherings are not good, but you can see one parent and then see the other ten minutes later.

"In the guidance it says meet in public spaces, people have interpreted that as parks, but we've seen people standing at the end of the front path and chatting to people at the door and that is fine.

"We are not recommending gardens, because you often have to go through the house to get to the garden and inside the virus can transmit more easily.

"I totally get the yearning to see people's loved ones.

"We're also looking at the possibility that two households can come together and interact a lot more, but we need to do more science behind that."

*This Morning continues at 10am on ITV tomorrow
