People Before Profit TD Brid Smith delivers swing dig against Maria Bailey

People Before Profit’s Bríd Smith has revealed that a broken leg she has did not come from falling off a swing.

Ms Smith delivered the well-placed dig against Fine Gael TD Maria Bailey in the Dáil this afternoon.

Ms Smith was representing PBP during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil, but before she posed her question on climate change, she had a pop at Ms Bailey.

She revealed that she had been injured and couldn’t stand for questions, but added that it didn’t involve a swing and that she wouldn’t be taking legal action.

Ms Bailey - and Fine Gael - faced a backlash from the public last month after it emerged she was suing the owners of the Dean Hotel on Harcourt Street in Dublin after she fell off a swing in the hotel bar, Sophie's, on a night out.

A fall in support for Fine Gael at the local elections has been attributed to the controversy by many party insiders.

Ms Smith addressed Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and said: “I hope you don’t mind if I don’t stand up, I have a broken leg.

“But I didn’t fall off a swing and I’m not going to sue anybody.”

However, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar didn’t take the bait carefully laid by Ms Smith.

He simply said: “I’m very sorry to hear about your injury and hope you make a speedy recovery.”
