One person took to a local Facebook group to ask the all-important question.
They posted: "Anyone know the significance of this on Ainsdale beach? I'm intrigued."
People were quick to comment, sure they knew the correct answer.
One woman wrote: "Ainsdale beach - Jocky's Post. A marker for riders training their horses on the beach where triple Grand National winner 'Red Rum' used to workout."
Another comment read: "It's so the fishermen know the way back in the dark. It has reflective bits on it which shines back at them. The rangers help move them when they get buried by drifting sand or when the sand drifts have changed the safe route. Especially important in the winter."
Another person picked up on the spelling error.
They commented: "Except Jockey is ‘ey’. Maybe they just couldn’t spell?!"
Another person chimed in, picking out a grammatical error as well.
They wrote: "The apostrophe should also be after the plural 'jockeys', as its the post used by multiple jockeys to time their rides. It's the Jockeys' Post. If you're putting up a public sign at least get the spelling and grammar right!"
Without a definitive answer, people will have to continue wondering the post is really intended for.
