Half of people fear they could catch coronavirus in a business or public washroom, a new survey suggests.
A similar number are worried about visiting pubs and cafes because of concerns over cleanliness, the research indicated.
A survey of 2,000 adults by Initial Washroom Hygiene found that one in three questioned the hygiene measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
Half of respondents said they were now more likely to wait to use their own bathroom rather than a public facility.
Businesses were urged to identify key hotspots within a washroom and shared facilities, as well as reducing the number of shared touchpoints.
Jamie Woodhall of Initial Washroom Hygiene said: “It’s clear washroom anxiety is affecting people’s confidence and experiences of visiting hospitality businesses post-lockdown.
“There are some easy steps businesses can take to eliminate the fear around using washrooms that will keep them coming back.
“However, we all have a role to play in protecting ourselves when we visit a public washroom.
“With approximately 80% of all infections transmitted by hand, the simple act of washing our hands can significantly reduce the risk of cross-contamination and help to keep us healthy.”
