People are using Edinburgh parks and streets as a toilet during lockdown, furious locals claim

Lockdown has finally started to ease and from today we can have barbecues with up to 8 (across two households) in a garden.

You can now meet a pal in a park whilst keeping a 2m metre distance and for a lot of people - especially those without gardens - it's a chance to spend a day in the sun.

But there's one big unspoken question.

What do you do when nature calls?

Under our current lockdown measures guests to your garden MUST NOT enter your home even to use the toilet - so is it time to designate a corner of grass for your visitors?

Alongside this the First Minister has announced that any guests from the other household must supply their food, cutlery, plates and cups.

The current advice is to only visit friends that live nearby so you can use your own facilities if you need to - or visit a green space close to where you live.

However, there are plenty of people using the side streets, bushes and trees in the locations they've visited - much to the disgust of Edinburgh locals.

Reports are coming in from Twitter that areas such as The Meadows, Holyrood Park and Portobello have seen an increase in public urination and defecation.

One Portobello resident voiced her concerns at having her street used as a toilet:

Another added that public toilets being shut "gives us nowhere to go to the loo but also nowhere to wash your hands either which is vital at a time like this.

"It seems to be being used as a deterrent to going out. Extremely restricted toilet options are bad for everyone but especially disabled people, those with kids, etc."

According to England's current lockdown measures, The Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Chris Whitty says when visiting the toilet at a friends house you must -

Wash your hands 'all the way through . This would mean washing your hands before you enter the house or as soon as you enter the house, to avoid contaminating any surfaces.

You should also wash your hands before you leave the house, again to avoid contamination and to remove any viral particles you have picked up.

As always, wash with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available use an alcohol based hand gel.

Wipe down all surfaces. Anything you touch should be cleaned to remove any potential contamination. Avoid touching anything unnecessarily, but anything you do touch should be cleaned. This includes walls, doors, door handles, the toilet, the sink and taps.

Anti-viral cleaning wipes should be effective at removing coronavirus from surfaces.
