People are taking on the 'purple shampoo challenge' but could it damage your hair?

The latest internet trend, the 'purple shampoo challenge', sees people covering their hair in loads of shampoo.

Purple shampoo has been used is salons and homes for years and is meant to remove brassy and yellow tones.

But people on the social media site Tik Tok have been filming themselves covering their hair in the stuff in order to see a colour change.

The hashtag #PurpleShampooChallenge has been searched for more than four million times on Tik Tok.

After leaving it on for 24 hours some people are left with lighter hair but as Mirror Online explain, purple shampoo works best on blonde, grey or highlighted hair.

People have taken to Twitter to give their opinion on the viral challenge, eager to try it for themselves.

However, some users are confused by the challenge stating: "is this a thing now?... Women have been using this shampoo for years".

Many people have questioned if lathering it on for such a long period of time could impact your hair health.

According to the Metro, this technique could potentially lead to damage, so think twice before running out to buy your own bottle.

Marco Coccia, Senior Colour Technician at WhiP London said: "The over use of [purple shampoo] could, with time and depending on the level of the blonde/grey, leave lilac stains and end up with the hair losing its brightness".
