People are raising money for a Hulme man who was brutally attacked after intervening in a violent racist attack

A fundraising campaign has been set up for a man who intervened in a ‘racially motivated hate crime’ and ended up with a broken nose and fractured jaw.

Clive Pyott, who lives in Hulme , was knocked unconscious in the street after he saw two men scream 'speak f***ing English' at a young Asian man as they punched him and stamped on him.

Saif Pathan, 55, from London, who does not know Clive, set up the fundraising campaign page after feeling inspired by his act of defiance.

“The selfless nature of getting involved in such a dangerous situation without any self-regard just moved me,” Saif told the Manchester Evening News.

“I just felt like I should do something to help and setting up a fundraiser was a small act of reciprocation I could do for his selflessness.”

Saif is hoping the campaign will reach its target of £1,000, which will go directly to Clive.

The attack resulted in Clive having to have extensive operations on his nose and jaw, and is still waiting to have further surgery.

He has since discovered that his tinnitus and vision has both got worse since the attack, and is waiting to hear back from doctors on what the next steps are.

Clive says he was shocked when he first heard about the fundraising page.

“I hadn’t even heard of GoFundMe before,” he said.

“I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. This total stranger who doesn’t know me has done this out of the kindness in his heart.”

Clive said the “astonishing” response to the story has meant he has since been invited to a dinner with a group of lawyers from London and has also been asked to give a motivational speech at a mosque in Manchester.

“I’ve been really shocked by the hundreds and hundreds of messages of support from people,” Pyott said.

“I’ve had messages from Mormon missionaries in America and students in Germany.

“It has reminded me that people are kind, there are nice people out there.”

Bringing attention back to the original incident, Clive said it was important for the men responsible to be found so they don't attack again.

"I don’t see it as bravery, it’s just a human response," he added.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police previously said: "Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anybody with information is asked to contact police."

You can donate to the GoFundMe page here.

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident number 3725 of 24/08/19; or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
