People are not happy with plans for another new bar in Crosby

Plans for a new bar to open in Crosby have not gone down well with people living and working nearby.

Ahead of a licensing meeting next week, Sefton Council has been inundated with objections - with some people even claiming to have been 'verbally abused' by those wanting to open new venue, Gambino's.

Proposals to open the bar and restaurant on the former site of a shop at 79 Coronation Road were refused by Sefton Council's planning committee in July - but owners remain determined to push ahead with their vision.

The empty unit was refurbished earlier this year, in anticipation of opening as a bar.

The other half of the semi-detached property is Corkscrew wine bar, and there are also a number of other bars and restaurants in close proximity.

As the site has permission to operate as a retail premises, owner Sophie Weymouth is currently operating the space as a sandwich shop while they appeal the planning decision.

And at a meeting at Southport Town Hall on Tuesday, she hopes to have her alcohol and live entertainment licence granted.

But a number of letters posted on Sefton Council's website reveal a long list of concerns from those in the area.

Cllr Sam Marshall has written to the council on behalf of Blundellsands ward residents who have 'raised concerns relating to the over-concentration of food and drink based commercial businesses' in the area.

She says concerns have also been raised about noise levels, antisocial behaviour, increased pressure on limited parking, and the potential for a negative impact on property prices.

One neighbour said: "I have lived here for more than 23 years and the area has changed beyond belief. Not all change is acceptable.

"I believe in 'live and let live' but this is stretching it to the limit, so please let me enjoy a peaceful retirement."

Another wrote: "Gambino's is a bar too far.

"Another bar could lead to an increase in criminal activity. Since [Rocksalt] opened cars parked at the rear of Sandalwood retirement apartments have been broken into."

A local business owner asked: "Am I worried about Gambino's being opened and a licence given to someone with no respect to others? Damn right I am!"

Three separate objection letters include allegations that Ms Weymouth's partner, Mr Shields, 'verbally abused' and 'threatened' those opposing the plans at the meeting in Southport on July 3.

But Mr Shields said: "Words were exchanged, in both directions. Comments were made and I made comments back. If I was verbally abusive, they were too.

"In the past I've been in trouble and some people are trying to make out like I'm still that person but I'm not.

"Anyone who knows me now knows I'm a changed man. We've met with people who live here, we've discussed their concerns, and our door is always open for a chat."

If the licence is granted, the venue will be permitted open 9am to 11pm seven days a week - with alcohol sold from 11am to 11pm.

Owners have applied for permission to play recorded music from 10am to 11pm, seven days a week; and live music from 2-11pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 5-11pm on weekdays.

They also want to open and serve alcohol until 1am on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Years Eve.
