People Are More Honest Than We Think, New Study Shows

Money is taken out of a wallet. AAP: Alan Porritt

In a study carried out in 355 cities in 40 countries, researchers from the US and Switzerland found that people around the world are "more honest than we think".

In an experiment aimed at testing the honesty of receptionists in various facilities such as banks, hotels and ticket offices, 17,000 missing wallets they found were returned to their owners whose identity cards were placed inside.

The researchers were surprised by the results of the study showing that the greater the amount of money found in the wallet, the greater the likelihood of returning it to its owner.

The result of the study contradicts with the prejudice of many people around the world. Surveys involving citizens and economists showed that the majority of the participants expected that people who find a wallet with a big amount of money would keep it to themselves.

The study shows that our perception of human is too negative, researcher Christian Lucas Tsunde told the German News Agency (DPA).
