People are just discovering hidden compartment in washing machine that 'eats' socks

If you've ever completed a load of washing and then found yourself one sock short, you're not the only one.

A puzzling moment sure to give you pause for thought; it's frustrating trying to work out where the garment has gone. But it turns out your washing machine could be the culprit.

As many of us suspect when faced with this head-scratcher, machines sometimes gobble up socks.

Luckily, a TikTok user has revealed they could be lurking inside a hidden compartment.

In a video shared by @d7customz, a man can be seen removing the side of a washing machine to look inside, and low and behold, you can guess what happened next.

It was filled with socks. Stunned, one viewer replied: "We owe our family an apology for blaming it on them."

"All the years joking about how 'the dryer eats them'," said another. Someone else joked: "Are my Tupperware lids in there too?"

But in good news for people on the search for their missing socks, there is hope.

As website Reviewed explained when it looked into the problem, it is common occurrence with different types of washing machines including front-loaders and top-loaders.

Sometimes socks get trapped in different components, and overloading the washer is also likely to cause problems.

If you have a front-loader you may be able to retrieve the socks though, by checking if there's a clean-out area.

Of course, the washing machine is not the only place they can get stuck. It might be that your socks went missing someplace else in the process. Or should I say, somewhere else?

When you're on the lookout for missing laundry it is well worth checking your tumble dryer too. Take a close look inside the lint trap if it is at the front of your dryer, as this is a common hiding space, according to Reviewed.
