People are happier living in Kilmarnock than in Ayr, says Rightmove survey

People living in Kilmarnock are happier than those living in Ayr- according to a new survery.

But online estate agent Rightmove reckons both towns are left in the shade by a place in the Borders that’s been ranked number one in the happiest places to live in Scotland.

A spokesman for Rightmove said: “We surveyed residents the length and breadth of Great Britain for our annual Happy at Home Index and the results are in.”

Ayr registered 12th place in the regional rankings (Scotland), but a lowly 152nd in the national (GB) rankings- with Kilmarnock soaring high in 6th place regionally, and 41st in the national rankings.

The happiest place to live in Scotland, according to the survey, is Galashiels, in the Borders.

Perth and Dumfries were ranked second and third respectively in Scotland.

More than 22,000 people across Great Britain took part in Rightmove’s Happy at Home survey, which asks residents how happy they are where they live, as well as asking them to rank 12 happiness factors.

The 12 factors range from how safe residents feel and how friendly the neighbours are, to how good the local services are, the level of community spirit and the quality of cultural activities in the area.

The market town of Hexham was the outright winner, winning the crown of the happiest place to live in Great Britain.

In second place is Harrogate, in Yorkshire, and taking third place on the podium is Richmond upon Thames, in London.

A Rightmove spokesman added: “To mark such glittering scores, we have shone a light on these communities to showcase some of the finest properties in the happiest towns, villages and cities in Great Britain.”
