People are getting glammed up to take the bins out

Nights out on the town or down the local boozer may seem like a distant memory right now and, after four long weeks of lockdown, we all need an excuse to don the gladrags and get dolled up.

And what better reason to pull out your best frock or shirt than to raise money for charity?

"Bin here, bin there...in fact bin nowhere," sees people get glammed up to take their bins out - an event that, for many of us has arguably become the highlight of our fortnight.

Those who take part are asked to share their photo on social media, tag a few mates and make a donation to cancer support centre Maggie's Manchester, which is based within the grounds of The Christie Hospital.

It costs tens of thousands of pounds a months to run the centre, with the bi-annual Maggie's on the Runway fashion show and gala dinner helping to raise a big chunk of that.

The event in 2018 - which featured models affected by cancer - raised an incredible £225k, but due to the COVID-19 restrictions, this year's show has been postponed.

So, instead the team came up with a new idea to raise cash by encouraging people to stage their own lockdown catwalks to help raise money for the centre - while taking out the bins.

Margo Cornish, board member for Maggie’s Manchester, said: "No-one is going anywhere at the moment, so it’s an excuse to get dressed up, feel good about themselves and donate to a very important support service.

"The anxiety and uncertainty is huge. Our centres throughout the UK are currently having to deal with a surge in communication from people worried over treatment changes, worried about their susceptibility to Covid 19 as well as the loneliness from not being able to see their family and friends or for some, fulfil things on their bucket list.

"This will continue far beyond the end of the lockdown."

Maggie's Manchester, which opened its doors in 2016, is currently closed due to the outbreak but its staff and volunteers are still providing invaluable practical, emotional and psychological telephone and online support for people living with the disease and their families.
