People are being warned against trying a viral cleaning hack as it could result in damage

There's no denying us Brits love a good hack.

From de-icing windows using carpet cleaner bottles, to using 2 pence pieces to get grease off baking trays, there really does seem to be a hack for pretty much everything these days.

However, before giving things a go it's important to make sure they're safe - as not every cleaning tip is quite as good an idea as you may think.

Plumbers are now warning against trying a cleaning hack which has seen thousands of people putting dishwashing liquid in their toilet tank compartments to keep them fresh, reports the Mirror.

The idea was first shared on Facebook group Mums Who Clean, by one woman who says she's been using the trick for 14 years.

She wrote: "[Put] Dishwashing liquid in the toilet tank compartment and every flush is fresh clean smelly bubbles and toilet always looks clean."

People rushed to give it a go themselves, but experts have warned against it.

Speaking to  news.com.au a plumber explained why you shouldn't try it at home.

Peter Daly, CEO of Master Plumbers advised people against using products that were not designed for use in a toilet system.

He said: "Master plumbers advises that it's safest to use  cleaning products specifically designed for flush toilets. People living outside built up areas who use septic tanks should ensure the product used is compatible with septic systems."

He added that customers should always think about the environment when choosing cleaning products.
