People are being urged to clap for Boris Johnson tonight

Thousands of Boris Johnson supporters are encouraging others to join a mass clap for the Prime Minister as he continues his battle against coronavirus.

The event follows those within the past two weeks that have been arranged for the nation to show appreciation to healthcare workers and those on the frontline.

Mr Johnson was transferred to an intensive care unit yesterday evening after he was admitted initially to St Thomas' Hospital on Sunday for suggested "routine tests".

It is understood he is not on a ventilator and is breathing without any other assistance.

Organisers have set the date for tonight (Tuesday, April 7) at 8pm for people to clap for the Prime Minister.

A dedicated Facebook group has been created, which now has more than 125,000 members.

"Let’s show our support for our prime minster and let him hear us clap for him", says the group description.

A number of people have shared their condolences and 'get well soon' messages, although some others have mocked the page.

While Mr Johnson is being cared for in hospital, First Secretary of State Dominic Raab is deputising in his place "where necessary".

The developments follow repeated questions to Downing Street about how the PM was ill enough to be allotted a hospital bed but deemed fine to lead the government.

Mr Raab's first job as stand-in PM on Tuesday was to lead the Government's emergency daily coronavirus "war Cabinet" meeting with senior colleagues and the UK's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance.

Meanwhile, Michael Gove is now self-isolating after one of his family members began to display coronavirus symptoms.

He has not yet been tested for Covid-19.
