People are being told to start their daily walks from home - and avoid 'unnecessary' car trips

Police are warning drivers not to take 'unnecessary' car journeys before exercising or walking the dog.

Officers in Eccles have advised the public that any daily exercise regimes, including walks or runs, should begin from home.

Sgt Simon Judd took to Facebook to ask people not to put any extra strain on stretched emergency services.

In a post, he wrote: "The government restrictions currently in place do not permit you to use your vehicle to travel to this location for exercise.

"Each and every one of use have been instructed to avoid unnecessary travel.

"You are entitled to exercise once daily and this should be done by walking, cycling or running from your home address. You should not be driving away from your address to carry this out.

"Please refrain from unnecessary travel until restrictions placed upon us all to tackle the coronavirus pandemic have been rescinded.

"We appreciate your cooperation and understanding at this time."

The government's current advice is that people who are not key workers performing vital services should only leave their home once a day for exercise or trips to shops for necessary supplies.
