People are baffled after discovering what this popular emoji actually means

Whether it’s a smiley face or a cheeky aubergine, emoji are now staple features in many people’s messages.

If you’re an emoji user, you may think you’ve got the characters cracked, but a revelation about one popular emoji may surprise you.

Emojipedia has revealed the true meaning of one of the building emoji, and Twitter users are absolutely baffled.

The emoji features a building with an H on it, leading many people to think that it was a hospital.

However, Emojipedia has now confirmed that the emoji actually means ‘Love Hotel.’

It explained: “Love Hotel Emoji. A hotel that can be hired by the hour, instead of as accommodation for the evening. Sometimes mistaken for a get well soon emoji due to the similarity in appearance to the hospital.”

Many users have taken to Twitter to express their amazement at the revelation.

One user wrote: “Lol, I never knew that was a Love Hotel. I thought the H stood for hospital. At least it makes a bit more sense now.”

Another added: “Omg idk if u guys knew this but this emoji represents a love hotel which is a big thing in japan. basically a hotel made to have sex in.”

And one joked: “I was today years old when I realised there is love hotel emoji. I’m screaming.”

According to Japan Guide, love hotels are found all over Japan.

It explained: “Love hotels (also known as boutique or fashion hotels) are hotels that offer double rooms for short periods of time.

"Typically you can rent a room for a minimum of one to three hours during the day, called a "rest", or for the whole night, called a "stay", which usually starts after 10 pm.

“As the name suggests, the main purpose of love hotels is to provide couples with a room to spend some undisturbed time together.”
