Pentagon could rename Iran war as conflict rumbles on

  • The Pentagon is reportedly considering renaming the US military operation against Iran to "Operation Sledgehammer" should hostilities resume.
  • The current conflict, "Operation Epic Fury," which commenced on 28 February, has stalled due to unresolved peace deal negotiations.
  • A new operation name would restart the 60-day congressional approval period mandated by the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
  • President Trump is weighing options to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, currently restricted by Iran, and remains sceptical of diplomatic resolutions.
  • Despite an indefinite ceasefire, Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal as "TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE" and described the truce as being on "massive life support."
