Pensioners stripped of TV licence plan 'civil disobedience' to clog up system

Pensioners who will soon be stripped of their free TV licences are planning to clog up the system in protest.

The 1,500-strong Silver Voices group wants over-75s to apply to the BBC for the benefit knowing they are not entitled to it.

It hopes the costs incurred will pressure the broadcaster to strike a new deal with the Government.

It said: “We are suggesting a ‘gum up the works’ campaign of civil disobedience which stays lawful, but makes sure that the cost of enforcing licence fee payment by the over-75s is far greater than the income received.”

As of May 31, over-75s will only get a free TV licence if they receive Pension Credit.

It means around 80% will have to pay the charge, which goes up to £157.50 in April.

Silver Voices added: “This campaign could comprise everybody currently entitled to a free TV licence to claim after May 31 whether or not they are in receipt of Pension Credit, appeal when the claim is turned down [and] refuse to pay until the last possible moment before court action is undertaken.”

The Mirror is campaigning to save the benefit after the Tories broke a 2017 pledge to protect it.

Silver Voices said if it can “encourage mass support... the policy would quickly become untenable”.

Director Dennis Reed said: “The objective will be to get the BBC to lobby to reverse the nonsense policy of a media company running a national benefits scheme.”
