Pensioners left 'too scared' to use Luas red line following spate of assaults and anti-social incidents

Pensioners have been left "too scared" to use the Luas red line following a spate of assaults and anti-social incidents on the service.

Details of a number of shocking incidents of anti-social behaviour on the Luas in recent weeks emerged on Monday.

In one incident, a woman's hair was allegedly set alight by a gang of teenagers while in a separate incident, a young armed teenager was arrested by gardai after threatening fellow passengers and damaging a tram.

And now Fianna Fail general election candidate Catherine Ardagh has said it is one of the biggest issues being presented on doorsteps as she canvasses locally.

She said: "Many residents in my own constituency of Dublin south-central are telling me on the doors that they are too afraid to use the Luas Red Line at night because of anti-social behaviour and young thugs causing chaos.

“Many older passengers are too afraid to use the Red Line after dark because of out of control teenagers.

“Passengers are being terrorised on public transport on a weekly basis and this behaviour needs to be stamped.

"A lot of older people in the community rely on the Luas as a means of transport but it’s entirely unacceptable that they are too scared to use the service."
