Pensioners bid goodbye to weekly luncheon club which served meals for 24 years

Pensioners in north Bristol have said their farewells to a long-running luncheon club.

Penpole Lunch Club, based at The Ridge in Shirehampton, had hosted a weekly meal for 24 years.

But yesterday afternoon (December 17) marked the final get-together after founder Sandra White decided to call it a day amid health concerns.

The 74-year-old said: "I'm not happy about it, but I know I've got no choice, really."

Mrs White, who is diabetic, set up the club more than two decades ago, having previously volunteered at a similar club in Avonmouth.

For the price of £3.50 every Tuesday, customers were served two courses of hot meals, prepared by Mrs White herself.

At the club's peak, it was regularly attracting 20 people - both male and female - most of whom were in their later years.

But recently attendance had dropped to around 10, said Mrs White, who explained some regulars had died or moved into care homes.

Yesterday, though, a total of 30 people turned out one last time for a chance to share memories and enjoy a Christmas dinner.

Mrs White, a retired receptionist, told Bristol Live: "They all loved it - one of them has gone out crying."

Asked what she would do with her Tuesday afternoons now, Mrs White said she would most likely seek out volunteering opportunities.

Social housing provider The Guinness Partnership supported the lunch club.

A spokesman said: "We are sad to hear The Penpole Lunch Club has closed after so many years.

"Sandra has been a committed custodian of the building and served her community well.

"Guinness remains committed to providing a community space for local people to use and we hope to support similar events and functions in the future."
