Pensioner was trapped inside car that careered over 20-foot bank on major Leeds road

Fire crews from across West Yorkshire rushed to the aid of an 83-year-old woman who became trapped inside her car after it came off the road and rolled 20 feet down a bank.

West Yorkshire Police were alerted to reports of an incident near the Gildersome Arms on Asquith Avenue in Gildersome shortly before 11am this morning (Friday).

Three West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service crews from Morley, Hunslet and Cleckheaton arrived at the scene within minutes, and found an elderly woman trapped in the driver seat of a blue Renault Capture at the bottom of a verge at the side of the road.

The road was immediately closed as firefighters cut the woman from from her car.

Paramedics then attended to the driver, who has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries.

Police reopened Asquith Avenue at around 12pm.
