Pensioner was so annoyed at being 'overcharged' 80p for a round he missed Liverpool's second goal of Champions League final

An 82-year-old granddad was left so angry at being 'overcharged' 80p for a round that he missed the end of the Champions League final.

Terrence Flynn, from Belle Vale , was in town on Saturday night watching the historic match with his granddaughter Victoria.

After seeing posters outside The Adelphi advertising £1.60 pints "whistle to whistle" when Liverpool or Everton were playing, they decided to watch the final at the Ranelagh Street hotel.

However, when the time came to pay for his round, Terrence claims he was charged £4 for two drinks - instead of the £3.20 he was expecting.

The extra 80p came as such an insult to the Belle Vale pensioner that he "decided to get off" and missed the second half of the final.

Speaking to the ECHO , Terrence said: "I went into The Adelphi Saturday evening to see the match. They had all these posters saying 'Carlsberg and Tetleys £1.60 when Liverpool are playing a match on TV' and that was whistle to whistle.

"That's why we decided to go there. I was with my granddaughter - she came up to see me and I said I will give you a night out.

"We went to The Adelphi and it wasn't so much about the prices but they turned around and said 'you're not paying those prices'. They told me it was £4."

He added that the bar area was too busy for him to handle during the final, so due to the prices and popularity of the bar he headed home while it was still 1-0.

Terrence said: "No we didn't see the match we got off and didn't watch it. I just got off. I left when it was 1-0 and by the time I got home it was 2-0. Getting ripped off is bad.

"They've got big signs outside saying 'whistle to whistle it's £1.60 a pint'. If the price I was expecting was £4 I would have paid. But when it says £1.60 and it's not £1.60 it goes against what they've said to the public.

Terrence was so put out by being charged 80p more than he expected that he even went back to The Adelphi the next day to complain.

He said: "I went back the next day to explain the issue. I went back and spoke to the general manager who said it was the price because of an agreement with the licensing authority. The sign was up saying £1.60 a pint."

The Liverpool ECHO approached Britannia, who own The Adelphi Hotel , for comment but they did not respond.
