Pensioner suffers head injuries after being knocked over by a bus in Sunderland

An 84-year-old man has been seriously injured after being hit by a bus in Sunderland.

The pensioner is in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with head injuries but police say he is in a stable condition.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision on Sunday morning to come forward.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At 8.58am today, police attended the junction of Peel/Toward Street, Sunderland.

"An 84-year-old male had been involved in a collision with a bus.

"The male's condition is serious but stable and next of kin are aware.

"If able to provide any information please contact 101 with reference 313 160619."

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We sent an ambulance and two Hazardous Area Response Teams and he was taken to the RVI with head injuries."
