A pensioner was left shocked after almost paying £45,000 for a single quiche in her local bakery.
Gillan Scott, 73, had been out for a meal at The Little Bakery in Cullompton, Devon, with her friends when she was almost billed 1,000 times what the meal should have cost.
Her friend, 77-year-old Bobbie-Jo, said the light lunch soon became an amusing but nonetheless stressful afternoon.
“I ordered a pie and lettuce, and Gillian had a quiche, and we had some chips with it,” Bobbie told DevonLive. “We also ordered a cake, coffee and paid for those who were with us. In all, it should have come to £45.
“Initially, Gillian’s card was declined, but Mandy, who was working here that day, told us to sit down while she sorted it. It happened twice before Fiona, who also works here, discovered that there was an additional two noughts on the end of the cost and that she was being charged £45,000.
“It came as a bit of a shock to us all. I nearly crashed my car on the way home through the shock of it all.”

Gillian added: “I was a bit scared at first that I would have a debt of £45,000 for a quiche. When I got home, we almost had to phone an ambulance because of it.
“Thankfully, Bobbie-Jo phoned the bank, who had declined the card because they were worried about it being potential fraud, and it has all been resolved now. She's only got £400 in her account."
Bobbie-Jo said they would now tell the ‘whole town’ about the amusing story.
“Gillian is now going to tell everyone about it because it’s when we phoned the bank to tell them, they were all laughing about it. It’s a funny story.
“The Little Bakery did a fantastic job in solving the problem. It’s a wonderful place and something you don’t get in many towns. They are all lovely here and do a fantastic job.”
