Pensioner slapped and violently struck to ground in unprovoked street attack

An unprovoked street attack left a pensioner needing emergency surgery after he was beaten to the ground.

The disgusting assault happened as the pensioner was walking down Gordon Street outside Bowland Court in Southport on January 30.

Police said the 71-year-old man was approached by an unknown thug who slapped him on the head and then struck him in his chest causing him to fall sideways.

The man sustained a thigh injury which left him needing emergency surgery on what police said were "painful fractures".

Police said the pensioner is now recovering at home.

The attacker is described as a white man aged between 30 and 40, around 5ft 11in tall, wearing dark clothing and had his hood pulled up.

After attacking the pensioner he is said to have walked away in the direction of Lord Street.

Detective Inspector James Halpin said: “An investigation is underway and we are carrying out CCTV, forensic and witness enquires following this incident.

“This was an awful ordeal for the victim, who ended up in hospital with some painful fractures which needed surgery.

"We're are working to identify the offender and bring him to justice for this inexcusable act of violence.
