Pensioner 'shaken' after hit and run driver ploughs into his car

A hit-and-run driver smashed into a pensioner's car before driving off from the scene.

The 76-year-old man was travelling in his Red Hyundai i10 on the Irvine Road in Crosshouse, Ayrshire at around 7.30pm on Monday when he was struck by another car.

He had reached the junction with Gatehead Road and Kilmarnock Road when the silver Vauxhall Corsa ploughed into him.

The driver then vanished from the scene without exchanging any details.

Emergency services raced to the scene to find the man uninjured by 'badly shaken' from the experience.

Police are now calling for any witnesses to come forward.

Constable Prout from the divisional road policing unit based at Irvine said: "Since the initial report of this collision we have been conducting extensive enquiries, including the review of CCTV and house to house enquiries, in an effort to trace the driver of the Vauxhall Corsa who made off from the scene of the crash without exchanging details or checking on the welfare of the other people involved.

"Thankfully the driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. From our enquiries we know that a number of people were in the area at the time of the incident or stopped to assist afterwards - we are keen to speak to these people as they may have information that would assist our enquiries.

"We are particularly keen to hear from the driver and occupants of a Red Seat Ibiza traveling towards Gatehead, a black Vauxhall Astra traveling towards Irvine and a man walking in the area at the time who ran to assist immediately after the collision.

"Anyone who may have seen the Vauxhall Corsa before or after the collision is also encouraged to get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the divisional road policing unit based at Irvine by calling 101 and quoting incident number 3037 of 21st December 2020
