Pensioner seriously injured as M73 horror smash sparks major delays

A pensioner is in a serious condition in hospital after a two-vehicle crash .

The 78-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after the car he was travelling in was in a collision with a van on the M73.

A second man travelling in the van was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the crash, which happened near the northbound Ballieston junction at around 12pm.

There are no details on his condition at this time.

The collision caused severe tailbacks in the surrounding area and left the northbound carriageway closed for several hours while investigators assessed the scene.

Police Scotland said a helicopter was dispatched but turned back when the injured pensioner was transported to hospital by ambulance.

A spokesman said: “A 78-year-old man was taken to the hospital in a serious condition.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
