Pensioner left with terrible injuries after being knocked over in Cardiff city centre

A family are urging witnesses to come forward after their 81-year-old mum was knocked over in Cardiff city centre.

Audrey Mitchell, 81, was returning from her daughter's house in Canton, on Tuesday, when she was knocked over outside Cardiff Castle .

Police were called to the scene at around 1.40pm and said the cyclist was on a black bicycle that went off in the direction of High Street.

Sue Oldham, 49, from Tredegar , says her and her four sisters were "unbelievably shocked" when they heard the news.

She said: "I was at the hospital having scans so my phone was switched off. My mother was visiting my sister and was on her way to catch a bus home to Taff's Well.

"She is incredibly independent, she loves walking and taking pictures of nature. When I switched my phone on, I had a text to say that she was in A&E so I got there as soon as possible.

"It was heartbreaking. We never thought we would see our mother like this. She was bruised up and had cuts on her face."

Castle Street was partially blocked while emergency services treated the woman.

Audrey has been left with a number of injures, including minor fractures around her left eye socket, a fractured left cheek, a cut on her forehead, concussion and a bleed to the brain.

Sue says all her siblings are shocked and they can't understand why anyone would ride off.

"The police told us she did nothing wrong, the light went green for her to cross. I can't understand why anyone would do this and then ride off.

"There's so much technology these days so hopefully someone has dashcam footage that may help or mobile phone footage.

"Obviously my mum is our priority but I hope that someone will come forward with some information."

She added: "My mum had a fall a few years back and it made her really cautious, so we don't know how this is going to affect her. It's going to knock her confidence really badly."

South Wales Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should contact them on 101, quoting incident number 595.
