Pensioner left stranded in the rain after bus driver refuses to let him on due to faulty pass

A senior citizen was faced with the prospect of walking 8km in the rain after a bus driver refused to allow him on because his travel pass was faulty.

The pensioner allegedly attempted to board the bus on O'Connell Street yesterday morning but his bus pass wouldn't scan.

The pass was newly issued and the man showed his new and old passes and to the driver but was still not allowed board.

The OAP then explained that he would have to walk to Ballymun in the rain as he didn't have any cash - but the driver remained unmoved.

Luckily, another bus pulled up a few minutes later and the driver of that bus let the man on, saving him from a long walk in the rain.

The man later sent a complaint to Dublin Bus about his treatment by the driver.

In response, Dublin Bus said: "I wish to acknowledge and thank you for your email. Apologies for the inconvenience caused on this occasion.

"I understand that the faulty travel pass was out of your control. The driver of the bus who did not allow you to travel with the faulty pass was following procedure by refusing travel with an invalid card.

"If an inspector had gotten onto the bus you could have been subject to a standard fare (penalty fine) of €100 is charged by the company to each passenger found not to be in possession of a valid ticket, pursuant to the Dublin Bus Bye-Laws.

"However, if you receive and pay a standard fare within 21 days of issue, a reduced charge of €50 will be accepted.

"Again, I would like to apologise that the travel pass issued to you by social welfare was faulty and inconvenienced you on this occasion."

Dublin Live has contacted Dublin Bus for further comment.
