Pensioner killed after being hit by unmarked police car was walking just half a mile from his home

A pensioner killed after an unmarked police car struck him while he crossed the road was just half a mile from his home when it happened.

The tragic 80-year-old has now been named as Leslie Waterfield, who lived a short walk from where the fatality happened on Warrington Road in Penketh.

An inquest was opened on Friday at Warrington Coroner's Court where brief details of the case were publicly read out.

Mr Waterfield was not far from his home on nearby Stocks Lane at the time of the accident, at 7.30pm on February 3.

The inquest confirmed the 80-year-old died at the scene.

The proceedings were adjourned pending further investigation by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), who automatically probe all deaths involving officers.

The next hearing at the coroner's court will not be for at least six months, it was added.

The unmarked dark-coloured BMW police car which hit Mr Wakefield was not responding to an emergency call, but it is still unclear where it was heading.

Investigators are still appealing for witnesses.

Details are yet to emerge about where Mr Wakefield was walking.
