Pensioner in court for dealing 'chemsex drug' GBL in Bristol

A Longwell Green man has admitted supplying a drug associated with the 'chemsex' scene.

Robert Jones, 69, dealt a quantity of Class C substance GBL (gamma-Butyrolactone) to a man in Bristol between December 13 and 16 last year.

GBL and the similar substance GHB are chemicals often taken to enhance sex, according to the drug charity Talk to Frank.

Its website says: “GBL is a dangerous drug with sedative and anaesthetic effects that can produce feelings of euphoria and can cause drowsiness.

"It’s very easy to overdose on GHB and GBL. Overdosing can lead to unconsciousness, coma and death."

Mr Jones, of Bath Road, pleaded guilty at Bristol Magistrates' Court on August 8 to supplying GBL. His case was adjourned to September 4 for sentencing at Bristol Crown Court.

Party drug GBL, which like GHB is sometimes known by the street name 'G', has effects which last around an hour, but doses are difficult to judge.

Just 1ml is enough to cause intoxication and a loss of inhibitions, while higher amounts can lead to blackouts or overdosing.

"If not diluted properly, GHB and GBL can burn the mouth and throat when swallowed," Talk to Frank says.

The Terrence Higgins Trust sexual health charity says: "Both types of G can be used legitimately as industrial solvent and paint stripper-type chemicals.

"When the UK law on the illicit use of GHB tightened, GBL largely took over from it on the scene as it’s more readily available as an industrial cleaner."

In 2009, a former user from Crumpsall revealed how she had been admitted to hospital dozens of times - sometimes unconscious - after taking GBL.

She told how her looks were ravaged by the drug, which was at that time still legal, the Mirror reported.
