Pensioner hosted sex party where man died of drug overdose, court hears

Bristol Crown Court ( Google )

A pensioner who hosted a sex party where a man died after taking the drug GBL has admitted supplying the illegal substance.

Robert Jones, 69, gave guest Nicholas Hadley the class C drug at his home in Longwell Green, Bristol.

Within hours the 50-year-old was dead.

White-haired Jones was fined £750 after pleading guilty to the offence at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday.

Sentencing, Judge Michael Longman said: “You have expressed your regret and remorse as to the terrible outcome.”

James Haskell, prosecuting, said Jones used the Fab Guys website to place an advert in December last year ahead of the bash the same month. It is not clear if anyone else attended.

Mr Haskell said: “He advertised a house party inviting participants to join him for consensual sexual activity.

“Nicholas Hadley attended. In the early hours of the next morning the defendant called 999, requesting an ambulance.

“Paramedics arrived at 6.50am. Sadly Mr Hadley was pronounced dead at 7.30am, despite attempts to resuscitate him.”

He added that initially Jones had lied to police, saying he had spotted Hadley, of Weston-super-Mare, outside his home and tried to help him.

But he admitted the truth in later police interviews.

Mr Haskell said: “He accepted he had given the deceased a Class C drug with his consent. The defendant was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

"A post-mortem confirmed death was caused by a large overdose of GBL. No negligence was attributed to this defendant.”

Jones, representing himself, said: “I would like to say how sorry I am regarding Mr Hadley’s death. It should not have happened.

“Its been a difficult time for me, but obviously nothing compared to his family.”
