Pensioner found dead on Glasgow footpath identified as police continue probe

A woman who was found dead on a Glasgow footpath has been identified as an 87-year-old pensioner.

The grim discovery was made close to Mainhill Drive in Baillieston, in the city's east end, on Tuesday morning.

Police raced to the public footpath, close to Mainhill Drive, when the alarm was raised just after 8.30am.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and initial reports said her identity was unknown.

On Wednesday Police Scotland confirmed that the body was on an 87-year-old woman, although cops are still treating the death as unexplained.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report about the body of an 87-year-old woman found on a public footpath at Mainhill Drive in Glasgow around 8.40am on Tuesday, 5 January.

"She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
