Pensioner faces trial over alleged £49k disability benefit fraud

A pensioner faces trial after denying that he fiddled disability benefit.

It is alleged Graham Branfield, 76, of St Andrew's, claimed £49,373 without declaring he was fit and working.

Evidence gained by prosecutors include the OAP delivering catalogues and regularly buying and lugging 25kg bags of bird food.

Branfield appeared today (June 10, 2019) at Bristol Crown Court via video link from Bristol Magistrates' Court.

The hearing was conducted in this way to accommodate wheelchair access for him.

He pleaded not guilty to dishonestly failing to notify a change of circumstances regarding the drawing of Disability Living Allowance.

He also pleaded not guilty to dishonest representation to obtain benefit and dishonestly failing to notify a change of circumstances regarding the drawing of Pension Credit.

The charges span from October 2011 to September 2017.

Susan Cavender, prosecuting, said Salisbury Crown Court would be the most likely venue for trial, as it allows wheelchair access in the dock.

The trial is expected to last three to four days.
