Pensioner dies in East Kilbride fire after blaze breaks out in tower block

A 65-year-old woman has died following a large fire at a block of flats in East Kilbride.

Five fire engines went to the scene at Sadlers Wells Court after the alarm was raised at around 10.20pm on Thursday night.

Police have now confirmed a pensioner has died after her body was found within a flat.

Crews were still at the scene in the South Lanarkshire town on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Police were called to a report of a fire at a property on Sadlers Wells Court, East Kilbride, around 10.30pm on Thursday, 23 January.

"The fire was extinguished by the SFRS and the body of a 65-year-old woman was recovered from the property.

"A post mortem will take place in due course to establish the cause of death.

"A joint investigation will be carried out with the SFRS to establish the cause of the fire."
