Pensioner dies in Cumbernauld house fire as two men rushed to hospital


A pensioner has died in a fatal house fire in Cumbernauld. Two men are also fighting for the lives in hospital, police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to a property on Glen Fyne Road at around 6am on Tuesday morning. Police shut the road down while advising the public to avoid the area.

A 79-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men aged 82 and 50, have been taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Pictures from the scene show emergency services outside a burnt out semi-detached property in the quiet street. The roof of the house has been extensively damaged by the blaze.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 6.25am on Friday, 1 July, to a report of a house fire in Glen Fyne Road, Cumbernauld. Emergency services attended and a 79-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Two men, aged 82 and 50, were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said earlier: “We were alerted at 6.05am on Friday, July 1 to reports of a house fire. Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances and an aerial height appliance to Glen Fyne Road in Cumbernauld.

"The fire has been contained and is presently being extinguished.”
