A pensioner has been conned out of £72,000 in East Lothian.
Police said the elderly victim was called by a number pretending to be from Santander Fraud Department who claimed their account had been used fraudulently by a third party, with a transaction requested for a large value.
The caller then asked the victim to move money immediately for 'prevention purposes' which they did.
Police are now urging others to be on their guard against similar scams.
The force said you should not be afraid to hang up the phone if you suspect fraudulent activity and to call a trusted number to confirm.
Fraudsters often use spoof numbers, making the call appear as though it is coming from a genuine bank number. Police advise that when calling your bank back, use a different phone to the one the initial call was received on.
Banking passwords or PIN numbers should never be given out over the phone.
Anyone with concerns or suspicions about a caller should report them to police as soon as possible on 101.
