Pensioner charged with killing great-grandson, 6, with air gun

An OAP has appeared in court today after his six-year-old great-grandson died from a gun pellet injury to his abdomen.

Albert Grannon, 77, faced a charge of manslaughter when he appeared in the dock, nine months after the death of Stanley Metcalf at his home in July last year.

Wearing a black flat cap, brown jacket, blue jumper and black trousers, spoke only to confirm his name, address, nationality.

No pleas were entered during the brief one minute hearing at Hull Magistrates Court.

District Judge Fred Rutherford told Grannon his charges were too serious to be heard at the Magistrates' court.

The judge said: "You are charged with two offences from the 26th of July. You can only be dealt with at the crown court.

"You are given unconditional bail to appear at Hull Crown Court."

Grannon, of Sproatley, East Yorkshire, was also charged with possessing a firearm without a certificate, will next appear on June 3 at Hull Crown Court and was released on bail until that date.

Family and friends packed the public gallery for the short hearing.
