Pensioner ‘can’t sleep’ over state of Bristol’s pavements which are a ‘danger’ to the community

A man says Bristol’s pavements are a “danger” to the community after his disabled wife fell on a broken slab

Raymond Rose, 73, of Bradwell Grove, called on the council to repair Bristol’s footpaths in 2019, but says the local authority has “done nothing” to fix them since.

It’s a situation which has caused Raymond and wife Susan a lot of stress and the pair say they are losing sleep as a result.

Raymond, a retired landscape gardener, wants all of Bristol roads fixed but deems four to be the worst - Union Street in the city centre, The Horsefair in Broadmead, Greystoke Avenue in Southmead and Doncaster Road in Southmead.

He is urging the council to resurface the roads, most of which he says are “uneven and dangerous”, and to fill the potholes.

“The roads are still filthy and in an awful state,” Raymond said. It is so bad my wife fell in a hole on one of the pavements. It’s dangerous especially for elderly people and those in wheelchairs.

“It’s particularly bad on Union Street near Wilkos and also near Primark.”

In 2019 Raymond told BristolLive there are broken slabs all the way around Primark in Broadmead.

“The slabs are all broken and sticking up,” he said. “It slants, so the water drains down and there is a big puddle all the time.”

For Raymond it’s an issue which still needs sorting.

“We’ve been on at the council for years now and they’ve done nothing,” Raymond said. “It’s really disheartening.

“We really want to improve Bristol’s roads for the community and the disabled.”

Bristol City Council has been approached for comment.
