Pensioner battered around the head by Merseyrail passenger he approached for a chat

A pensioner was battered around the head in a vicious attack by Merseyrail passenger he had struck up a chat with.

The victim, a man in his 70s, suffered the sickening assault on board a Merseyrail service travelling between Hunts Cross and Southport .

Today British Transport Police said the pensioner was punched several times in the head by a passenger he had engaged in consveration.

Now police have issued a CCTV image of a man they believe "may have information" which could help them investigate the attack which happened at 8.10pm on Saturday, June 22.

British Transport Police said the elderly victim suffered a number of injuries for which he required hospital treatment.

A spokesman said: "The conversation became heated, with the second man punching the victim a number of times to the head."

He added: "The victim sustained a number of injuries which required medical treatment. Officers believe the man shown in this CCTV image may have information which could help them investigate."
