Pensioner arrested over alleged sexual offences in Scouting Ireland released

A pensioner who was arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged sexual offences in Scouting Ireland has been released.

The man, in his 70s, was questioned in relation to alleged offences which are said to have happened over a 30 year period.

He was being detained at Togher Garda Station in Co Cork on Friday.

However, he was released without charge on Friday night and a file will now be prepared for the DPP.

A spokesman said: "A man in his 70s arrested in connection with an investigation into Scouting Ireland was last night, Friday 14 February 2020 released without charge.

"A file will now be prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions."

A previous statement said: "Gardaí have arrested a man in his 70s in relation to sexual offences that are alleged to have occurred over a 30 year period.

"The investigation surrounds a number of complaints relating to an individual associated with Scouting Ireland. To date, An Garda Síochána has carried out a lengthy investigation into these matters.

"As part of the investigation Gardaí from the Protective Services Unit in Cork city, with the assistance of local Gardaí, carried out four searches at properties in Co. Cork and one in Co. Kerry. During the searches Gardaí seized documentation, electronic devices and computers.  

"An Garda Síochána is continuing to liaise with the review group and Tusla in relation to these matters and thanks them for their assistance to date. Each and every complaint made to An Garda Síochána will be investigated with professionalism and compassion.

"An Garda Síochána is appealing to any victim(s) who have not yet come forward to make a complaint at their local Garda station or via the confidential historical abuse phone line at 1800 555 222."
