Pensioner admits causing death of retired head teacher by dangerous driving

A pensioner has admitted causing the death of a retired head teacher by dangerous driving in a car crash.

Barbara Calligan, 62, was killed in the crash which took place in Hillcrest Road in Abergavenny at around 5.10pm on March 15 last year.

A Subaru Impreza driven by 73-year-old Carol White hit pedestrian Mrs Calligan, of Abergavenny , who was pronounced dead shortly later. A cause of death was given as multiple internal injuries and blunt trauma.

Appearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday White spoke only to confirm her name and enter her pleas.

When asked by the clerk what plea she wanted to enter to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving the defendant replied: “Guilty.”

White, of Brynhonddu, Pandy, Monmouthshire , was released on bail to appear at the same court on September 10 for sentencing.

At the time of her death Mrs Calligan’s family described her as “selfless, fun-loving and bright, enjoying her life”.
