Pensioner, 97, tragically dies in hospital after Edinburgh house fire

An elderly Scots pensioner has died in hospital following a horror house fire in Edinburgh this morning.

Emergency services scrambled to the inferno at a two-story home on Braehead Avenue in Braepark at around 5.19 am on Thursday, July 8.

Earlier we told how a 97-year-old woman was rushed to Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary and was fighting for her life following the blaze.

Police have now confirmed she sadly died a short time later.

Four fire engines were called in to bring the flames under control in the early hours of this morning.

Cops say their enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a fire at a property on Braehead Avenue around 5.40am on Thursday, 8 July, 2021.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. A 97-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she died a short time later.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
