A spokesperson for the fire service said the casualty was "conscious and breathing." He was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was treated for the affects of cold water immersion.

Liverpool Coastguard confirmed they were called out to the incident and that a man, 91, was rescued from the water.

It has not been established how the pensioner entered the water.

A police spokesman said to the ECHO : "Emergency services were called to the Pier Head at 11pm last night, Monday 14th June, following concern for the safety of an elderly male in the water.

"The male was recovered by the marine rescue unit of the fire service from the water, checked over and taken to hospital."
