Pensioner, 91, arrested in connection with Morningside crash that killed tot Xander Irvine

A pensioner has been arrested in connection with a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

Xander Irvine was left seriously injured after the horror accident on Morningside Road in Edinburgh on June 30.

The youngster was rushed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary alongside his mother Victoria but was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

His mum, who suffered minor injuries, was released a short time later.

A major investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident, which took place at around 2.30pm.

Police Scotland confirmed they have now arrested a 91-year-old woman.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a woman (91) has been arrested in connection with a fatal road crash that happened around 2.30pm on Tues 30 June 2020, when a boy (3) was struck by a car on Morningside Road.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A mountain of floral tributes, cards and soft toys were left at the scene by shocked local residents in the days following little Xander's death.

The tot’s heartbroken parents released a touching tribute to their Lego-daft tot, who had been out walking with his mum at the time of the crash.

They said: “Xander Paul Thomas Irvine, 3-years old, was out for a walk in Morningside with his mother on Tuesday afternoon when a tragic accident occurred.

“Xander was a very happy, bubbly, intelligent little boy who was very dearly loved by his parents Victoria and Paul.

“Xander was a real chatterbox who just loved books, playing with all sorts of vehicles and his Lego.

“He really enjoyed life and he enriched the lives of everyone he met. Victoria and Paul are devastated and feel as if their hearts have been ripped out.

“Xander will be so very sorely missed by them both and all his family and friends in Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

Hundreds of mourners lined Morningside Road on July 9 as the youngster was laid to rest.

Dozens of roses were thrown onto the funeral cars as scores of well-wishers came to pay their respects near the scene where he lost his life.
