Pensioner, 87, 'proud' to be among first to get coronavirus jab after 9 months shielding

An elderly man who was one of the first to get the coronavirus injection has said he is "proud" to have it.

Hari Shukla, 87, and his wife Ranjan had the first of two injections of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine today after nine months shielding.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning on Tuesday, Hari, a retired doctor, called it an "honour" to get the jab and said he completely trusts the science behind it.

He said: "We're very proud of it, I think it's a great honour to participate, it's very important that we had it.

"We just had the injection and we are very pleased we were able to do it because it's very important for all of us."

Hari continued: "I was not nervous at all because the research has been carried out properly.

"I knew there would be absolutely no problem at all so I was very confident about it."

Because of their age, the couple stayed in for nine months during the pandemic.

Ranjan said: "It was difficult but we did manage it and now we've taken this injection."

The couple will go back on January 5 to get the next injection.
