A murder investigation has been launched after an elderly man was found strangled at home in south London, as a suspect “known to him” appeared in court.

Brian Hunt, 87, died at the property in Wellmeadow Road, Lewisham around 1am on Sunday.

Police were called alongside the London Ambulance Service.

Mr Hunt was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said.

A force spokesman added: “His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.”

A post-mortem examination held on Monday gave his cause of death as compression of the neck.
